Steps For Building The Hog Fence Antenna Hobby tubing and brass stock can be found at hobby and hardware stores. Ace Hardware usually has a good selection in stock. A. DRIVEN ELEMENT 1. Fashion and drill the 1" x 2.5" brass plate. 2. Bend the 1/8" x 36" brass welding rod in the center. Look at the diagram to make sure that the rod is bent into a "U" shape maintaining the proper 3/16" gap between the two 7.5" pieces. 3. BEFORE making the last two bends on the welding rod, slip the rod through the two holes in the brass plate. DO NOT solder it yet, just make sure it has a tight fit to facilitate future adjustments. 4. Prepare the two 5/32" x 12" pieces of brass tubing and slip them over the ends of the welding rod. B. FEED LINE ASSEMBLY 1. Strip the end of the 3' coaxial cable as shown in the enlarged detail of the drawing. Solder the center conductor to the upper section of the U- bent rod and solder the braided shield to the lower section. Be careful not to melt the insulation on or inside the cable. Secure the the cable to the lower section of the U- bent rod with a black nylon wire tie. 2. Install the desired connector plug on the other end of the cable. C. ASSEMBLING THE DRIVEN ELEMENT TO THE FENCE WIRE 1. Solder or braze the brass plate (and driven element) to the section of Hog Fence as shown in the diagram. Be careful not to damage the coaxial cable by allowing it to be heated excessively. Note that the openings in the fence are to be positioned with the narrow direction running vertically. 2. Use plenty of black nylon wire ties to attach the two 36" pieces of copper tubing to the rear of the fence. Bend the fence into the described parabolic shape using the measurements shown in the chart. D. TUNING AND TESTING 1.. If your antenna is correctly assembled, it should be fairly close to being properly tuned already. The best way to tune an antenna is to transmit through it and adjust for minimum reflected power. This is not really critical here, unless you plan to transmit with this antenna. 2. To tune the antenna, slide the two 5/32" pieces of brass tubing on the ends of the U-bent rod to the suggested lengths. Now slide the entire element into and out of the brass plate. You will be able to use these three adjustments to optimize performance. 3. Once the antenna has been tuned, solder everything into place and re- check the parabolic shape. E. INSTALLATION 1. Install the antenna as high as possible, connect the best antenna cable you can afford, and point the open end of the parabola towards Sweat Mountain in Northern Cobb/Fulton county. 2. Tune in the signal and ENJOY! 5/5/94
